OpenAI, the organization behind the renowned chat system ChatGPT, and Microsoft, a leading American tech company, are joining forces to create a groundbreaking data center project. With an estimated cost of up to $100 billion (2.3 trillion crowns), this project signifies a monumental leap in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
The project is expected to be primarily financed by Microsoft. The data center will house a supercomputer named ‘Stargate’, equipped with millions of specialized chips. These chips are designed to support AI tools from OpenAI, marking a significant advancement in AI technology.
The Stargate supercomputer is set to be the largest among a series of supercomputers that the two companies plan to build in the United States over the next six years. The construction process is divided into five stages, with Stargate being the final stage. Microsoft is also reportedly working on a smaller supercomputer for OpenAI, which is expected to be launched as part of the fourth stage in approximately two years.
The estimated costs of this project are about a hundred times higher than the prices of the largest data centers today. This underlines the importance of AI development and indicates the scale of investment that will be needed for it in the coming years.
Stargate is expected to be one of the largest and most modern data centers in the world. It could occupy several hundred hectares of land and consume up to five gigawatts of electricity. Experts consider it to be key to OpenAI training and the operation of new, more advanced AI models than ChatGPT-4.
The name ‘Stargate’ is inspired by the 1994 sci-fi movie of the same name. This reflects the futuristic vision and ambition that both OpenAI and Microsoft share for this project.
The collaboration between OpenAI and Microsoft on this $100 billion AI data center project is a testament to the growing importance and potential of artificial intelligence. As we look forward to its operation in 2028, the Stargate supercomputer promises to usher in a new era of AI capabilities and applications.
